The following model is a first for us at DiecastSociety.com. If you aren't yet familiar with the Ilario brand or the genius behind these miniature replicas—Ilario Chiera—you are about to discover them. Since the early 1980s, Ilario has been producing high-end, hand-assembled models, focusing primarily on classic cars from the early 20th century. That era gave rise to some of the most beautiful vehicles ever designed, some of which still inspire modern styling. These are niche models, available in 1:43 and 1:18 scales. Our featured model today is a 1:18 scale Bugatti T57SC Atalante in blue and white.
One could easily write a chapter or two on the history of the Bugatti T57SC Atalante. We certainly don't claim to be experts on the subject—far from it. There are plenty of online resources available if you wish to delve deeper. However, we assume that any collector of such classic gems is likely already well-versed in their history.
Furthermore, some DiecastSociety.com subscribers—including Marshall Buck (many thanks for your help!)—are deeply interested in this topic and won't hesitate to weigh in if needed. Suffice it to say that the car we are looking at today went through numerous iterations before becoming the Blue/Cream Bugatti T57SC Atalante (SN57523), and even that version was short-lived. The Blue/Cream finish was produced for three to four years before giving way to yet another transformation. It was last sold by Gooding & Co. and repainted black—its original color.
It is our custom to present the outer packaging of any new product we unveil for the first time in detail. So, let us begin with that. Even before catching a glimpse of the model itself, one can sense that it holds something exceptional. The box’s texture and appearance are particularly striking; no detail has been overlooked. The lid is covered in a snakeskin-effect material, while the secondary layer features a gold finish—a perfect harmony between the two.
Inside, the model rests on a grey, leather-effect base adorned with a plaque, protected from the elements by an acrylic cover. Once again, the quality of the finish is impeccable. Every Ilario piece comes with a certificate of authenticity. This is not merely a marketing ploy; these are genuine limited editions. Our unit is number 1 of 40.
The model is not as imposing as one might expect; it measures approximately 25 cm in length and 9 cm at its widest point. We opted for a blue bodywork accented with touches of white—blue being, as everyone knows, Bugatti’s signature color. The paintwork is of exceptional quality, ranking among the finest our team has ever seen. There are absolutely no flaws or imperfections. As for the shape and overall design, Ilario’s craftsmanship deserves high praise once again.
In case you didn't know, this is a sealed resin model. Over the years, our team has examined numerous resin models, giving us valuable experience and an informed perspective. We have also seen models from other prestigious brands such as BBR, MR Collection, Ignition Model, and many others. Ilario is, without a doubt, the gold standard. Why? Here are a few reasons. First, the paintwork is exceptional. Second, the definition of the panel gaps is simply remarkable. Every area of the model—whether it is the engine access, the interior, the rear storage hatch, or the spare wheel compartment—is so finely detailed that it creates the illusion of a full 360-degree view. That is not all; the finish on the chrome and metal parts is outstanding. This model exudes realism, which is ultimately what collectors look for. That said, appreciating it requires a certain level of knowledge and passion.
The radiator grille is an undeniable eye-catcher. Its style remains a benchmark for modern designs. Ilario has done a remarkable job in perfectly defining it, as well as the headlights and auxiliary lights. The chrome work is flawless, particularly on both bumpers. The wide front fenders are finely crafted and accentuate the central seam line. Finally, each fender is topped with a turn signal—two exquisitely detailed features.
Moving away from the central grille, you will notice the remarkable precision of the hinges on the two engine access doors. The latches and handles are superbly crafted and attached; there is no room for error here. Each hinged door features three carefully mounted grilles. The fit and finish are, once again, excellent. Moving towards the rear, the fluid lines of the interior roof extend into two small windows. These provide access to the trunk and the spare wheel compartment. As previously mentioned, Ilario's team has done an impeccable job defining the panel gaps. Metal components complete the assembly; the fuel filter placement, in particular, draws the eye—inviting one to open it for refilling.
The rear wheels are almost entirely concealed. The fenders, with their flawless contours, feature a metal trim strip along their lower edges that highlights the fine detail of the original riveting. The lower rear section is finished with four small brake lights—two on each side. Just below, on the driver's side, the four exhaust outlets are visible. Every element is of impeccable quality.
The wheels of the Bugatti T57SC Atalante are striking. First, the chrome finish has a mirror-like sheen. The sharply defined spokes bear a remarkable resemblance to the originals. The valve stem provides the finishing touch.
Moving to the car's interior, the eye is immediately drawn to the doors. Here, too, the perfectly executed panel gaps lend a sense of realism and crispness to the overall look. Note the realistic detailing of the hinges and door handle. Furthermore, the window glass is not merely a thin layer of clear plastic (as is often the case with resin models); it has substantial thickness.
The interior is as meticulously crafted as the exterior; nothing has been overlooked. The floor features a textured blue covering. The beige seats and door panels boast flawless finishes—though one might wonder why the team didn't opt for genuine leather for these elements. The dashboard is wood-trimmed, and all dials, instruments, and controls are perfectly integrated. The quality and precision of every component are remarkable.
The 1937 Bugatti T57SC Atalante (SN57523) by Ilario is an exceptional piece—a near-perfect scale replica. It is undoubtedly the finest resin model we have seen to date. The model excels in numerous respects: exterior paintwork, overall design, panel gap precision, exterior and interior materials, assembly, and finish... the list goes on. In our view, this model is virtually flawless, boasting build quality far superior to that of the competition.
"Niche" is indeed the perfect term to describe the brand, as Ilario does not cater to the mass market—a fact reflected in its pricing. Ilario is well aware of this and knows exactly where it stands. Ultimately, these models come at a premium price; exclusivity and artisanal craftsmanship generally account for the high cost. If you are looking for a 1:18 or 1:43 scale miniature from this era, crafted with such a high level of skill and passion, resin models are simply unrivaled. Bravo! Buy with confidence; you will be receiving an exceptional piece.
