Perhaps more importantly, making things mattered.

Carlo understood that an object could be functional and beautiful at the same time. A piece of furniture could be useful, yet also possess character, movement and elegance. This world of craftsmanship would leave a profound mark on his eldest son.

Yet Ettore was drawn towards a very different kind of creation.

Not sculpture.

Not furniture.

Machines.

His fascination with mechanics appeared remarkably early. Still a teenager, he encountered the new world of motorised bicycles and tricycles then beginning to emerge in Italy. Rather than simply being fascinated by the machines, he wanted to understand them — and, inevitably, to improve them.

That distinction would become fundamental to everything he created.

The Artist's Son

Before there was Bugatti, there was art.

Ettore Bugatti was born in Milan on September 15, 1881, into a family for whom creation was not a profession, but a way of life. His father, Carlo Bugatti, was a celebrated designer of furniture and jewellery whose work drew upon the rich vocabulary of Art Nouveau and oriental influences. His younger brother, Rembrandt, would become a distinguished sculptor, known particularly for his studies of animals.

Ettore therefore grew up surrounded by forms, materials, proportions and craftsmanship.

The atmosphere of the Bugatti household was one in which beauty mattered.

Ettore did not approach a machine merely as something to be used.

He wanted to know why it worked.

And then he wanted to know how it could work better.

His father recognised this instinct. In 1898, while Ettore was still only sixteen, Carlo encouraged him to begin an apprenticeship with the Milanese manufacturer Prinetti & Stucchi. There, the young man found an environment in which his natural understanding of mechanics could finally express itself.

It did not take long for Ettore to go beyond simply learning from others.

He began modifying the machines placed in his hands, experimenting with engines and developing ideas of his own.
Within a remarkably short time, he had designed his own motorised tricycle.
At around seventeen, he was already combining engineering with competition,
using racing not simply as a sport, but as a laboratory in which his ideas could be tested.

This was the beginning of something that would define the Bugatti philosophy
for decades to come:

innovation through experience.

The young Ettore wanted to build something better, then put it to the ultimate test.

Speed.

Reliability.

Balance.

Elegance.

The transition from apprentice to creator came quickly. By the turn of the century, Ettore was already working on his own automobile, developed with the support of the Gulinelli brothers. The car revealed a remarkable characteristic of its creator: Ettore was not interested in designing only one part of an automobile. He wanted to conceive the entire object — its engine, chassis, mechanical components and body — and to control the smallest details of its construction.

It was an extraordinary ambition for such a young man.

And perhaps this is where the story of Bugatti truly begins.

Not in a factory.

Not with a famous racing car.

But with an idea inherited from an artistic family:

that creation should bear the mark of its creator.

Ettore would take that principle into a new and largely unexplored world.

He would bring the eye of an artist to the discipline of engineering.

And the automobile would never be quite the same again.

The Road to Molsheim

The first automobile had been born from curiosity.

Now came the years of experience.

For the young Ettore Bugatti, the years that followed would be a succession of workshops, partnerships and experiments. Each would teach him something new. Each would bring him a little closer to the automobile he truly wanted to create.

The road to Molsheim would not be a straight one.

It would be built one machine at a time.

I — De Dietrich

A First Industrial Challenge

By 1902, Ettore Bugatti was no longer simply a gifted young mechanic from Milan.

His early automobiles had attracted attention, and that attention brought him to Alsace, where he entered into an agreement with the De Dietrich company at Niederbronn-les-Bains.

For a man barely twenty-one years old, it was a remarkable opportunity.

De Dietrich already possessed something Ettore had never had at home: an established industrial organisation capable of turning an engineer's ideas into automobiles produced for customers.

Ettore was now confronted with a different reality.

An automobile had to be more than an ingenious machine.

It had to be built.

It had to be reliable.

It had to be powerful enough to compete.

And it had to withstand the judgement of customers — and of the road.

Working with De Dietrich, Ettore developed a series of automobiles that would become known as the De Dietrich-Bugatti Types 3, 4 and 5. The cars grew progressively more powerful, and Ettore himself took part in competition, putting his creations to the test.

The experience was formative.

He was learning how to transform an idea into an automobile.

But he was also discovering something else.

Industrial production came with compromises.

And Ettore Bugatti was not a man naturally inclined to compromise.

II — Hermès-Simplex

Freedom to Experiment

In 1904, the collaboration with De Dietrich came to an end.

But Ettore did not stop.

Instead, he joined forces with Émile Mathis, a young Alsatian businessman with whom he had already crossed paths during the De Dietrich years.

Together, they established a new venture around the Hermès-Simplex automobile, built at the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques in Graffenstaden.

Here, Ettore found greater freedom to explore his ideas.

The Hermès-Simplex was not a modest machine. Its large four-cylinder engines produced considerable power for their time, and later versions developed as much as 90 horsepower. Some were capable of speeds exceeding 130 km/h — extraordinary figures in the first years of the twentieth century.

But raw power was never enough for Ettore.

He was increasingly interested in the relationship between power, weight, balance and mechanical efficiency.

The automobile was becoming a complete object in his mind. Every component had a purpose. Every detail could be improved.

And every improvement had to serve the whole.

The partnership with Mathis would eventually come to an end, but the years at Hermès-Simplex gave Ettore another essential lesson:

an automobile should not merely be powerful. It should have character.

By now, he was no longer simply designing cars for others. He was developing a philosophy of his own.

III — Deutz

The Road to His Own Automobile

In 1907, Ettore Bugatti moved once again — this time to Cologne, where he joined Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz AG.

Deutz was a very different environment from the workshops he had known before. The company had a major industrial heritage, rooted in engine manufacturing and associated with Nikolaus-August Otto, one of the pioneers of the internal-combustion engine. Deutz wanted to develop automobiles, and Ettore was given responsibility for their production.

For Ettore, it was another step forward.

But something had changed.

He now possessed the experience of an engineer who had worked with several manufacturers, raced his own creations and confronted the practical realities of automobile production.

And while working for Deutz, he began designing something that belonged to him alone.

In 1908, alongside his work for the company, Ettore began developing a small automobile in his own workshop.

It was radically different from many of the large, heavy automobiles of the period.

He wanted it to be light, powerful and nimble.

The philosophy was simple:

less weight,

more efficiency,

better balance.

The result was the car that would become known as the Type 10.

It was not designed to satisfy an existing market.

It was designed according to Ettore's own ideas.

The Type 10 was compact, light and elegant, with a small-displacement four-cylinder engine and a chassis conceived around the principle of efficiency rather than excess. It was, in many ways, the clearest expression yet of everything Ettore had learned since Milan.

For the first time, all the pieces were coming together.

The engineer.

The designer.

The racer.

The perfectionist.

And the artist.

The Last Step

By the time Ettore Bugatti arrived at Deutz, he had already spent almost a decade learning the automobile from every possible angle.

He had designed.

He had experimented.

He had raced.

He had worked within established manufacturers and discovered both the possibilities and the limitations of industrial production.

But at Deutz, something changed.

While the company was developing larger and heavier automobiles, Ettore was working quietly on a very different idea.

A small car.

A light car.

A car built around the belief that performance did not necessarily require weight or enormous engine capacity.

He called it the Type 10.

It was a remarkably compact machine for its time: a two-seater weighing only around 365 kilograms, powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine producing approximately 10 horsepower. Yet it could reach around 80 km/h. More importantly, its engineering reflected the principles Ettore had been developing throughout his career — lightness, efficiency, mechanical precision and balance.

The Type 10 was not simply another automobile.

It was a statement.

At a time when many manufacturers equated performance with increasing engine size, Ettore was moving in the opposite direction.

Less weight.
Less complexity.
More efficiency.
More control.

The car also revealed another essential part of his character.

Ettore did not separate engineering from appearance.

The Type 10 was technically purposeful, but it was also elegant. Its proportions were compact and harmonious. Nothing appeared to have been added merely for effect.

The form followed the idea.

And the idea was simple:

make the machine better.

In September 1909, at an air show in Cologne, Louis Blériot — already celebrated for his pioneering aviation achievements — was given the opportunity to drive the Type 10.

He was impressed.

So impressed that he urged Ettore to produce the car himself.

Perhaps Ettore was already waiting for someone to say exactly that.

Because the Type 10 had been created for one reason above all others:

to prove what he believed an automobile could be.

The decision was made.

His contract with Deutz would come to an end.

Ettore would no longer design automobiles for someone else.

He would build them under his own name.

With the support of partners including Pierre de Vizcaya and financing from the Darmstädter Bank, Ettore found the place where his ideas could finally become reality. At the end of 1909, he moved to Molsheim, in Alsace, taking over a disused dyeing factory. On January 1, 1910, the lease was officially signed.

It was an old industrial building in a small Alsatian town.

Nothing about it suggested that it would become one of the most famous names in automotive history.

But Ettore Bugatti was no longer looking for a place to work.

He had found a place to create.

The years of apprenticeship were over.

The years of experimentation were over.

The search was over.

Ahead of him stood an empty factory, a small team, a handful of ideas — and the Type 10.

Soon, the name would change.

The car would evolve.

And the workshop would begin to fill with machines unlike any the world had seen before.

Molsheim was waiting.

And Bugatti was about to begin.

Molsheim

There are places that become part of history.

And then there are places where history is made.

For Ettore Bugatti, Molsheim would become both.

When he arrived in Alsace at the end of 1909, he was only twenty-eight years old. Behind him lay a decade of experimentation, racing and industrial experience. Ahead of him stood an old, disused dye works — hardly the setting one would expect for the birth of one of the world's most celebrated automobile marques.

Yet Ettore saw something others might not have seen.

Possibility.

Molsheim was ideally situated for his ambitions. Alsace offered skilled craftsmen, an established industrial tradition and excellent connections with France and Germany. The region's proximity to the Rhine also made the movement of materials and goods relatively easy.

But the location alone did not create Bugatti.

The philosophy did.

On January 1, 1910, Ettore officially signed the lease for the former dye works that would become his factory. He had secured financial backing to produce automobiles and aircraft engines, and with the help of a small team, the transformation began.

There was no grand industrial complex.

No vast production line.

No established automobile empire.

There was simply a workshop, a young engineer and a clear idea of what an automobile should be.

And that idea was already present in the Type 10.

From Type 10 to Type 13

The first task at Molsheim was not to start again.

It was to improve.

Ettore continued developing the Type 10 with his new team, refining the chassis, engine and mechanical components. The result was renamed Type 13 — the first official Bugatti model.

The transformation was significant.

The four-cylinder engine grew to 1.4 litres and produced approximately 15 horsepower. The little car could exceed 90 km/h, remarkable performance for such a light machine.

But numbers alone do not explain the Type 13.

What mattered was the philosophy behind them.

Ettore had discovered that speed did not necessarily require a large engine.

It required balance.

The Type 13 was light, compact and precise. Its narrow chassis and carefully developed suspension gave it qualities that would soon become inseparable from the Bugatti name.

The car was not imposing.

It did not need to be.

It was alive.

And this was perhaps Ettore's greatest achievement at this early stage: he had created an automobile that behaved like a coherent whole.

The engine.

The chassis.

The steering.

The suspension.

The weight.

Nothing existed in isolation.

Everything worked together.

This was engineering — but it was engineering guided by an aesthetic instinct.

The same instinct he had inherited from his father.

Beauty through proportion.
Performance through simplicity.

The old dye works was beginning to produce something entirely new.

The Workshop

The character of Bugatti was also being shaped by the people inside the factory.

Ettore worked closely with his craftsmen, insisting on precision and taking a personal interest in the smallest details of construction. The factory would never become a place where the automobile disappeared into an anonymous production process.

The hands that built the cars mattered.

The tools mattered.

The finish mattered.

Even when production increased, Ettore's relationship with the machines remained intensely personal.

This would become one of the defining characteristics of Molsheim.

Bugatti was becoming more than a manufacturer.

It was becoming a workshop of ideas.

And perhaps that is why the cars produced there would always feel different.

They carried the personality of the man who designed them.

The First Tests

Ettore had always believed that an automobile should prove itself on the road.

The Type 13 was no exception.

Its lightness and agility made it particularly well suited to competition, especially on the rough roads and demanding circuits of the period. The car could exploit qualities that larger and heavier automobiles struggled to match.

The lesson Ettore had learned as a teenager was becoming a principle:

build something better — then test it.

The Type 13 would soon begin to demonstrate what that philosophy could achieve.

But before the great victories, before the racing legends and before the name Bugatti became famous across Europe, there was simply a small car leaving a small factory in Alsace.

And that was enough.

Because Molsheim had given Ettore something he had never possessed before:

a place where his ideas belonged entirely to him.

The first chapter of Bugatti's history had begun.

And the little Type 13 was about to write the next one — on the road, against the clock, and against the best automobiles of its time.

A Different Kind of Factory

The factory at Molsheim was small.

But Ettore Bugatti never intended it to become ordinary.

From the beginning, the workshop reflected its creator's personality. There was little interest in anonymous mass production, and even less in the idea that an automobile should be reduced to a collection of standardised components.

Ettore wanted to know what was happening inside his factory.

He wanted to understand how each component was made.

And he wanted the finished automobile to reflect the same care that had gone into its smallest mechanical detail.

This was not simply a question of quality.

It was a question of character.

The craftsmen of Molsheim were not merely assembling machines. They were building automobiles according to a philosophy that was still unusual in the young motor industry.

Precision mattered.

Lightness mattered.

And beauty mattered.

The influence of Carlo Bugatti could still be felt, even though Ettore had chosen a completely different medium.

His father's workshop had taught him that beauty could emerge from proportion, material and craftsmanship.

Now Ettore was applying the same principles to steel, aluminium, brass and mechanical components.

The automobile had become his material.

The Art of the Detail

Ettore was known for paying attention to details that many manufacturers would have considered insignificant.

A component hidden beneath the bodywork still had to be beautifully made.

A mechanical solution had to be elegant, not merely functional.

A part that could be made lighter should be made lighter.

And when two solutions offered similar performance, Ettore instinctively preferred the one that was simpler, more refined and more harmonious.

This philosophy would become increasingly visible in the automobiles emerging from Molsheim.

The cars were often smaller and lighter than their competitors.

Their engines were compact but sophisticated.

Their chassis were designed with an understanding of balance that went beyond raw power.

And their mechanical components were frequently finished with a degree of care more commonly associated with fine machinery than with industrial production.

The distinction was important.

Bugatti was not trying simply to build automobiles.

Ettore was trying to compose them.

The Type 13 Takes Shape

The Type 13 was the first true expression of this philosophy.

Derived from the Type 10, it retained the compact dimensions and lightness of its predecessor while benefiting from a series of improvements made at Molsheim.

Its four-cylinder engine grew to approximately 1.4 litres and produced around 15 horsepower. The little car could exceed 90 km/h — remarkable performance for an automobile of such modest size.

But its greatest quality was not its speed.

It was its balance.

The Type 13 was light enough to respond immediately to its driver.

Its narrow chassis and carefully developed suspension gave it agility on roads that were often little more than rough tracks.

It did not overwhelm the road.

It read it.

And this was precisely the kind of automobile Ettore wanted to build.

A machine that communicated with its driver.

A machine that rewarded precision.

A machine in which mechanical efficiency became something almost instinctive.

The philosophy that had begun with the young man experimenting with a motorised tricycle in Milan was now becoming a complete automotive language.

A Name Begins to Mean Something

At first, Bugatti was simply the name of the man who had designed the car.

But gradually, it began to mean something more.

It meant lightness.

It meant precision.

It meant individuality.

And, increasingly, it meant performance.

The cars from Molsheim attracted attention not because they were the largest or the most powerful, but because they behaved differently.

Drivers noticed.

Engineers noticed.

And competitors noticed.

The Type 13 would soon begin appearing in competition, where its lightness and agility would reveal a quality Ettore had understood from the very beginning:

the road was the ultimate test.

The workshop could produce a beautiful machine.

But only the road could prove that it was a good one.

And Ettore intended to prove it.

The little factory was beginning to find its identity.

The machines were becoming more refined.

The men inside the workshop were becoming more experienced.

And Ettore's ideas were becoming more ambitious.

But history was about to interrupt the rhythm of Molsheim.

In 1914, Europe went to war.

The workshops that had been dedicated to automobiles would soon be asked to serve a very different purpose.

The next chapter of Bugatti's story would not begin on a race track.

It would begin with war.

War and Renewal

The Interrupted Dream

The young factory at Molsheim had begun to find its rhythm.

The Type 13 was evolving, the workshop was growing, and Ettore Bugatti was refining a philosophy built around lightness, precision and mechanical efficiency.

Then, in 1914, Europe went to war.

Automobile production was interrupted.

But Ettore did not stop creating.

The demands of war turned his attention towards aviation, where the same principles that had guided his automobiles suddenly acquired a different importance.

Weight.
Power.
Reliability.

Around 1915, Bugatti developed an eight-cylinder aircraft engine producing around 250 horsepower. Later came far more ambitious sixteen-cylinder designs, including the 420-horsepower King-Bugatti engine developed for the American market. The end of the war in November 1918 brought those projects to an abrupt halt.

For Ettore, however, the experience was not lost.

He had spent the war exploring a new dimension of engineering — one in which every kilogram mattered and where extracting maximum power from a compact mechanical package was essential.

When peace returned, he brought that knowledge back to Molsheim.

The Type 13 Returns

In 1919, Bugatti resumed production of the Type 13.

But the little car had not remained unchanged during the years of interruption.

Its 1.35-litre four-cylinder engine now featured a remarkably advanced four-valve cylinder head, allowing better gas flow and producing around 30 horsepower. Other refinements included white-metal bearings and pistons, a fuel pump and targeted oiling of critical components.

Ettore had taken the philosophy of the Type 13 further.

The car remained light.

But now it was technically sophisticated as well.

And increasingly, it was becoming a racing machine.

By 1920, the engine had grown to almost 1.5 litres, while the racing versions received further improvements to the crankshaft, compression ratio, carburation and ignition. The result was a car capable of remarkable performance while retaining the agility that had always been its greatest strength.

The Type 13 had found its natural environment.

The road.

Brescia

Then came 1921.

At the Grand Prix des Voiturettes in Brescia, four Bugatti Type 13s crossed the finish line in the first four positions.

Ernest Frédéric won.

Pierre de Vizcaya followed.

Then Michel Baccoli.

Then Pierre Marco.

It was more than a victory.

It was a demonstration of a new philosophy of racing.

The great, heavy automobiles that had dominated the early years of competition were being challenged by something smaller, lighter and more agile.

The Type 13 weighed only around 490 kilograms, yet its 1.45-litre engine could eventually produce up to 50 horsepower and propel the little two-seater to around 150 km/h. Its lightness allowed it to brake later, change direction more quickly and maintain speed through corners.

Brescia gave the car its immortal name.

Brescia.

And it gave Bugatti something even more important:

proof.

Ettore's philosophy worked.

Lightness could defeat power.

Precision could defeat size.

And an automobile designed with intelligence, balance and elegance could become a formidable racing machine.

The little Type 13 had transformed the reputation of the young company at Molsheim.

Bugatti was no longer simply a promising manufacturer.

It had become a force in motor racing.

And Ettore Bugatti was about to create the car that would make that reputation legendary.

The Next Step

The Type 13 had shown the world what lightness could achieve.

But Ettore was not finished.

He wanted more.

More speed.

More precision.

More power.

And a machine designed from the beginning for one purpose:

to win.

The answer would arrive in 1924.

Its name would become synonymous with Bugatti.

Type 35.

The Type 35

The Legend of the Blue

By 1924, Ettore Bugatti had already proved his philosophy.

The Type 13 had demonstrated that lightness could defeat power.

Brescia had shown that a small, agile automobile could dominate the road.

But Ettore wanted more.

He wanted to create a racing car without compromise.

Not an adaptation of a road car.

Not simply a more powerful Type 13.

A machine designed from the beginning around one idea:

to be the best.

And in 1924, at the Grand Prix of Lyon, the world saw the answer.

Its name was Type 35.

A New Kind of Racing Car

At first glance, the Type 35 seemed almost deceptively simple.

Two seats.

Four wheels.

A narrow body.

A long, curved bonnet.

And that unmistakable horseshoe-shaped radiator.

But beneath its elegant proportions was an extraordinary concentration of engineering.

The first Type 35 used a 1,991 cm³ straight-eight engine with 24 valves and thin-wall construction, producing around 90 PS and capable of revving to approximately 6,000 rpm. The complete racing car weighed only about 750 kilograms.

For Ettore, however, the important figure was not the horsepower.

It was the weight.

He understood something that many of his competitors had yet to fully appreciate:

performance is not only about adding power.

Sometimes it is about removing everything that does not need to be there.

The Type 35 became an exercise in this philosophy.

The chassis was light.

The body was light.

The wheels were light.

Even the front axle was specially designed as a hollow, lightweight structure, while the rear axle was shaped to pass around the chassis rather than simply running straight beneath it.

Every kilogram had a reason.

Every component had a purpose.

And every unnecessary gram was an enemy.

Engineering as Sculpture

This is where the Type 35 becomes something more than a racing car.

Look at it.

The proportions are not the result of decoration.

They are the consequence of engineering.

The narrow body follows the chassis.

The long bonnet follows the engine.

The low nose reduces resistance.

The curved radiator dominates the front because the engine needs cooling.

The wheels are light because unsprung weight matters.

The whole automobile appears to have been drawn with a single continuous gesture.

Nothing seems excessive.

Nothing seems accidental.

This was Ettore's particular kind of beauty.

Beauty created by necessity.

The Type 35 did not need ornament.

Its engineering was its ornament.

And this is perhaps where the influence of Carlo Bugatti becomes visible once again, decades after the young Ettore had left his father's artistic world.

Carlo had taught his son that an object could be functional and beautiful at the same time.

Ettore had simply chosen a different material.

Instead of wood, ivory and metal ornamentation:

aluminium, steel, magnesium and mechanical precision.

The automobile had become his sculpture.

The Secret Beneath the Bonnet

The engine was equally remarkable.

Ettore used an innovative crankshaft supported by two roller bearings and three ball bearings, allowing the eight-cylinder engine to reach high rotational speeds while maintaining remarkable smoothness and durability.

It was an extraordinarily sophisticated solution for the time.

And it revealed something fundamental about Ettore Bugatti.

He was not interested in making the most complicated machine possible.

He was interested in finding the right solution.

That distinction would become one of the defining characteristics of Bugatti engineering.

Sophistication without unnecessary complexity.

Lightness without fragility.

Performance without sacrificing drivability.

The Type 35 was therefore not simply fast.

It was coherent.

Everything worked together.

The First Race

The Type 35 made its competition debut at the Grand Prix of Lyon in July 1924.

Five examples were entered.

The result was disappointing.

The cars had shown extraordinary speed in practice, but the race exposed a problem that had nothing to do with Ettore's engine or chassis.

The tyres had been poorly vulcanised and could not withstand the speeds reached by the new Bugatti.

It was an unusually human beginning for a machine that would become legendary.

The Type 35 had not failed.

It had simply encountered a problem that even Ettore could not solve by redesigning the automobile itself.

And Bugatti learned.

At the next major opportunity, the Type 35 was already showing its potential.

The legend had begun.

The Targa Florio

In 1925, the Type 35 entered the Targa Florio — one of the most demanding road races in the world.

It was not a smooth circuit.

It was a brutal combination of mountain roads, tight corners, changing surfaces and enormous distances.

A race that rewarded not only speed, but endurance, precision and mechanical reliability.

The Type 35 won.

And it would return to win the Targa Florio four more times with later Type 35 derivatives.

This was precisely the environment for which Ettore's philosophy had been made.

On a long, difficult road, brute force could become a disadvantage.

Weight mattered.

Balance mattered.

Braking mattered.

And above all, the driver needed confidence in the machine.

The Type 35 gave him that.

Evolution Toward Perfection

Ettore did not consider the Type 35 finished.

He never did.

The car evolved constantly.

The Type 35T received a larger 2.26-litre engine, developed specifically with the Targa Florio in mind. Later came the supercharged Type 35B, with a 2.3-litre straight-eight capable of producing up to around 140 PS.

The Type 35 had become faster.

But the fundamental philosophy remained unchanged.

Lightness first.

The supercharger did not replace the original philosophy.

It amplified it.

More power could now be exploited because the chassis was already capable of handling it.

The result was a racing machine capable of exceeding 200 km/h while retaining the extraordinary agility for which the Type 35 had become famous.

The Drivers

But a racing car is nothing without the people who drive it.

And the Type 35 attracted some of the greatest drivers of its era.

Louis Chiron.

Tazio Nuvolari.

René Dreyfus.

William Grover-Williams.

Albert Divo.

And countless private drivers who discovered that the Bugatti could make a highly skilled driver feel almost invincible.

The car's success was not confined to factory teams.

That was another part of its genius.

The Type 35 could be raced by professionals, wealthy amateurs and private entrants alike.

It created an entire generation of Bugatti racing enthusiasts.

And wherever the cars appeared, they became unmistakable.

Blue.

Elegant.

Fast.

Almost impossibly light.

More Than a Victory

Between 1924 and the end of its active racing career, the Type 35 accumulated more than 2,500 victories, according to Bugatti's historical records.

But the number alone does not explain its importance.

The Type 35 changed what people expected from a racing car.

It demonstrated that engineering could be beautiful.

That a small manufacturer could challenge the largest names in Europe.

That a lightweight machine could defeat much more powerful competitors.

And that a racing car could be both a scientific instrument and a work of art.

That is why, a century later, the Type 35 remains one of the defining symbols of Bugatti.

Not because it won so many races.

But because everything about it was designed to work together.

The engine.

The chassis.

The wheels.

The brakes.

The body.

The driver.

And the road.

Nothing unnecessary.

Nothing accidental.

Nothing excessive.

Just the relentless pursuit of the perfect machine.

This was Ettore Bugatti's art.

The Royale

The Impossible Automobile

After the delicacy of the Type 35, Ettore Bugatti wanted to build something entirely different.

Not smaller.

Not lighter.

Not faster around a circuit.

Bigger.

Far bigger.

The idea had been forming in his mind for years.

Ettore did not want merely to build another luxury automobile. He wanted to create the ultimate automobile — a machine so imposing, so technically sophisticated and so beautifully constructed that it would stand above everything else on the road.

He called it Type 41.

The world would call it Royale.

The Greatest of Them All

When the first Royale appeared in 1926, it belonged to another world.

Its proportions were almost absurd.

More than six metres long.

A 4.3-metre wheelbase.

And beneath its immense bonnet, an eight-cylinder engine of 12.8 litres.

Around 300 horsepower.

At a time when even the most prestigious automobiles were measured in much smaller dimensions, the Royale seemed almost more like a piece of architecture than a car.

Yet Ettore did not see excess.

He saw perfection on a larger scale.

The engine itself was derived from an aviation design philosophy. Its enormous displacement allowed it to produce its power at remarkably low engine speeds, with maximum output arriving at around 1,800 rpm.

The Royale did not need to scream.

It simply moved.

With authority.

With extraordinary smoothness.

With the effortless power Ettore believed a true luxury automobile should possess.

A Car for Kings

Ettore intended the Royale for the most distinguished customers imaginable.

Kings.

Princes.

Industrial magnates.

Heads of state.

He imagined a clientele worthy of the automobile.

And the price reflected that ambition.

The Royale cost several times more than comparable luxury cars and more than ten times the price of other Bugatti models. Ettore had planned a much larger production run, but the economic climate would make such ambitions impossible.

The irony was striking.

The greatest automobile Bugatti had ever created appeared just as the world was entering one of the greatest economic crises of the twentieth century.

The Great Depression changed everything.

Potential buyers disappeared.

And the Royale became almost too extraordinary for its own time.

Only six production examples were ultimately built.

Each was unique.

Each received its own bodywork.

Each became an individual expression of its owner — and of the coachbuilder who interpreted the enormous Bugatti chassis.

Beauty at a Different Scale

The Royale also revealed another side of the Bugatti family.

The famous radiator cap carried an elephant designed by Ettore's brother, Rembrandt Bugatti.

It was a small detail on an enormous automobile.

But it was precisely the kind of detail Ettore understood.

Even an object designed to dominate the road could contain a work of art.

The mechanical and the artistic worlds were once again meeting.

Just as they had in Carlo Bugatti's workshop decades earlier.

The scale had changed.

The principle had not.

An automobile should be beautiful because it is well conceived.

The Roadster Esders

Perhaps no Royale illustrates this philosophy better than the car ordered by the French industrialist Armand Esders.

For its bodywork, Ettore's son Jean Bugatti created an exceptionally elegant roadster.

Esders wanted to drive exclusively during daylight.

So Jean did something almost unthinkable.

He removed the headlights.

The result was a remarkably pure silhouette, with nothing interrupting the long, flowing line of the bodywork.

It was an extraordinary moment.

The son was beginning to leave his own mark on the creations of his father.

And this is where the story quietly begins to change.

Ettore had created the philosophy.

But a new Bugatti was beginning to emerge.

Jean.

The Royale was an extraordinary achievement.

But commercially, it was a failure.

And perhaps that makes its story even more fascinating.

Ettore had tried to build the greatest automobile in the world.

He had succeeded.

The world simply wasn't ready to buy it.

Yet the Royale would leave something behind that was far more important than commercial success.

It proved that Bugatti could move effortlessly from the smallest and lightest racing machines to the largest and most luxurious automobiles of its age.

From the Type 35 to the Type 41.

From lightness to grandeur.

From competition to aristocracy.

And behind both stood the same man.

Ettore Bugatti.

Jean Bugatti

The Son Who Became a Master

The Royale had been Ettore Bugatti's dream of automotive grandeur.

But while his father was imagining enormous engines and automobiles worthy of kings, another Bugatti was quietly finding his own voice.

His name was Jean.

Born in 1909, the same year his father arrived in Molsheim, Jean grew up inside the world of Bugatti. The factory was not simply his father's workplace.

It was his childhood.

He learned by watching.

He absorbed the sound of engines, the smell of oil and metal, the movements of craftsmen and the endless conversations about automobiles that surrounded him.

And unlike most children, he did not have to imagine what he wanted to become.

It was already being built around him.

Born at Molsheim

Jean was not simply the heir to an automobile company.

He was the son of a man who believed that engineering and beauty belonged together.

From an early age, Jean showed an exceptional interest in design and mechanics. His father encouraged him, but he also allowed him to develop his own ideas.

By his twenties, Jean was already deeply involved in the development of Bugatti automobiles.

And something became increasingly clear:

Jean was not trying to become another Ettore.

He was becoming Jean Bugatti.

That distinction would matter enormously.

Where Ettore often approached the automobile from the standpoint of mechanics, Jean possessed an instinctive understanding of proportion, line and form.

He could look at a chassis and imagine the body that belonged on it.

He could see an automobile not only as a machine —

but as an object.

A sculpture in motion.

The influence of Carlo Bugatti seemed to have travelled through the family once again.

But this time, it had found a new expression.

The Designer Emerges

During the 1930s, Jean became increasingly responsible for the design of some of the most sophisticated automobiles produced at Molsheim.

The Type 50, Type 55 and ultimately the Type 57 demonstrated an evolution in Bugatti design.

The cars were still unmistakably Bugatti.

But they were becoming more refined.

More graceful.

More modern.

The mechanical architecture remained important, but the relationship between chassis and bodywork became increasingly sophisticated.

Jean understood something that would define his greatest creations:

an automobile should be beautiful from every angle.

Not simply from the front.

Not simply when standing still.

But when moving.

When seen from a distance.

When passing quickly.

When disappearing down a road.

This was design conceived in motion.

The Type 57

Introduced in 1934, the Type 57 became the foundation for a family of some of the most celebrated Bugatti automobiles ever created.

But the Type 57 was also something more.

It became a canvas.

Jean and the craftsmen of Molsheim could develop different bodies around the same mechanical foundation, creating automobiles that shared their engineering while possessing completely different personalities.

And this was where Jean's talent truly began to shine.

The automobile became a collaboration between engineering and sculpture.

Atlantic

Then came the car that would become Jean Bugatti's masterpiece.

The Type 57 SC Atlantic.

Its body was unlike almost anything that had come before it.

The sweeping roofline.

The low windscreen.

The teardrop proportions.

The dramatic dorsal fin running from the front of the bonnet to the rear.

And the riveted aluminium bodywork, a consequence of the lightweight material and construction technique used for the car.

The Atlantic looked fast even when standing still.

That may be its greatest achievement.

It did not need to move to suggest movement.

Jean had created something that existed somewhere between an automobile and a piece of sculpture.

And once again, the old idea returned:

Automobile is an Art.

A Different Kind of Bugatti

The Atlantic was not a car designed to please everyone.

It was too low.

Too dramatic.

Too unusual.

Too expensive.

But that was precisely its strength.

Jean was no longer simply continuing his father's work.

He was pushing Bugatti into a new aesthetic language.

The elegant curves of the Atlantic anticipated the aerodynamic forms that would dominate automobile design in the years to come.

Yet it remained unmistakably handmade.

There were no unnecessary ornaments.

No decorative excess.

Every line had a purpose.

Every surface was tensioned.

Every curve seemed to lead somewhere.

The car appeared to have been drawn in one continuous movement.

It was Jean Bugatti's answer to the question his father had been asking for decades:

How can engineering become art?

Jean's answer was simple.

Ettore remained the founder and the authority at Molsheim.

The Tragedy

Jean's future seemed extraordinary.

He was only thirty years old.

Bugatti had entered a new era.

The Type 57 was becoming one of the most sophisticated grand touring automobiles of its time.

And Jean was preparing the next generation of designs.

Then, on August 11, 1939, everything changed.

While testing a Type 57 tank-bodied racing car near Molsheim, Jean lost control while avoiding a cyclist who had unexpectedly entered the road.

He was killed instantly.

He was thirty years old.

The loss was devastating.

For Ettore, it was not simply the death of his son.

It was the loss of the man who had been becoming his successor.

The future of Bugatti had disappeared in a single moment.

And only days later, Europe would enter another war.

The golden age of Molsheim was coming to an end.

The Last Masterpiece

Jean Bugatti left behind relatively few automobiles compared with the generations that followed.

But his influence was immense.

The Type 57 Atlantic became one of the most celebrated automobiles ever created.

Not because it was the fastest.

Not because it was the most powerful.

But because it demonstrated something that had always been at the heart of the Bugatti philosophy:

technical excellence could become beauty.

Jean had taken the language inherited from his father and transformed it.

He had made it his own.

And in doing so, he had ensured that the name Bugatti would forever be associated not only with racing victories and engineering brilliance —

but with automotive art.

The End of an Era

When the Dream Faded

Jean's death changed everything.

For years, Ettore had been preparing his son to carry the future of Bugatti.

By 1936, Jean had taken responsibility for the company.

He was twenty-seven.

The future seemed to belong to him.

Then, on August 11, 1939, Jean went out for a test drive near Duppigheim, not far from Molsheim.

A cyclist suddenly entered the road.

Jean swerved to avoid him.

The car left the road.

Jean was killed instantly.

He was thirty years old.

For Ettore, this was more than the loss of a son.

It was the loss of the man to whom he had intended to entrust everything.

The designer.

The engineer.

The heir.

The future of Bugatti.

And there was no time to recover.

Less than a month later, Europe was at war.

The Last Years at Molsheim

The world that Ettore had built was disappearing around him.

The factory was affected by the conflict.

The political situation in Alsace became increasingly dangerous.

Eventually, Ettore left Molsheim and took refuge in Bordeaux.

Some of his most precious possessions were sent away by train.

Among them was the extraordinary collection of Bugatti treasures that he was desperate to protect.

The famous Atlantic known as La Voiture Noire was listed among those possessions.

It would never be seen again.

The war gradually consumed what remained of the world Ettore had created.

And when it ended, the old Bugatti no longer existed.

A Man Without His Future

Ettore returned to Molsheim after the war.

But he was no longer the same man.

Jean was gone.

The factory had suffered.

The automobile industry had changed.

And the world that had allowed Bugatti to flourish before the war had disappeared.

The company struggled to recover.

There were attempts to develop new automobiles, but the extraordinary creative momentum of the pre-war years could not be recreated.

The Type 251 would eventually become the final attempt to return Bugatti to Grand Prix racing.

It was an ambitious project.

But the world had moved on.

The era of the great independent automobile artisans was coming to an end.

And Ettore, who had once seemed almost incapable of accepting limitations, was now fighting against circumstances that no amount of engineering could overcome.

The Last Journey

Ettore Bugatti died in Paris on August 21, 1947.

He was sixty-five years old.

He had spent almost fifty years creating automobiles.

He had built tiny racing machines and enormous luxury cars.

He had designed engines for cars, aircraft and even trains.

He had transformed an abandoned factory in Molsheim into one of the most famous automobile workshops in the world.

And he had created a name that had become synonymous with something more difficult to define than speed.

Beauty.

When Ettore died, the company he had created was still alive.

But the extraordinary world that had existed around him was gone.

His son Jean was gone.

His great era was gone.

And gradually, so too would go the factory itself.

In 1956, after 47 years of production and around 7,950 automobiles built from Type 13 through Type 251, the gates of the Bugatti factory at Molsheim finally closed.

The machines became silent.

The workshops emptied.

The name remained.

What Remained

Perhaps Ettore's greatest creation was never a particular automobile.

Not the Type 35.

Not the Royale.

Not even the Atlantic.

It was an idea.

The belief that an automobile could be engineered like a machine, shaped like a sculpture and built like a work of art.

That idea survived its creator.

It survived Jean.

It survived the factory.

And, eventually, it would survive the disappearance of the company itself.

Because some names disappear when their factories close.

Others become history.

And a very few become legend.

Bugatti became legend.

The Name Lives On

From Molsheim to the Future

For a time, it seemed that the story of Bugatti had ended.

The factory had fallen silent.

Ettore was gone.

Jean was gone.

The world that had produced the Type 35, the Royale and the Atlantic belonged to another age.

But the name remained.

And sometimes, a name is enough to begin again.

The Return

Nearly five decades after the original factory had closed, Bugatti returned to Molsheim.

The revival would lead to a new generation of extraordinary automobiles under the Volkswagen Group: the Veyron, the Chiron and the final W16 creations.

The technology had changed.

The materials had changed.

The performance had reached levels Ettore could never have imagined.

But one thing remained remarkably familiar.

Molsheim.

The historic home of Bugatti continued to be the place where the most exceptional automobiles bearing the name were conceived, assembled and finished by hand.

A New Era

In 2024, Bugatti revealed the Tourbillon.

It was not intended simply to replace the Chiron.

It was presented as the beginning of a new era.

A naturally aspirated V16.

Three electric motors.

A hybrid powertrain producing 1,800 horsepower.

And, remarkably, an analogue instrument cluster inspired by fine watchmaking rather than a conventional digital screen.

The numbers belong to the twenty-first century.

But the philosophy feels strangely familiar.

Ettore believed that if the right solution did not exist, it had to be invented.

Then refined.

Then tested.

And finally made beautiful.

That same ambition remains visible in the Tourbillon.

Molsheim, Once Again

In July 2026, Bugatti inaugurated La Manufacture, a new production facility built within the historic Molsheim site.

It is here that the Tourbillon era will take shape.

A new building.

New technologies.

A new generation of craftsmen.

Yet the same place.

The same pursuit of perfection.

And, more than a century later, the same extraordinary idea:

that an automobile can be more than a machine.

It can be an object of engineering.

An object of desire.

An object of art.

Automobile Is an Art

Perhaps this is what Ettore Bugatti ultimately left behind.

Not simply a company.

Not simply a collection of extraordinary automobiles.

But a way of looking at the automobile.

For Ettore, performance was never enough.

Engineering had to be intelligent.

Construction had to be precise.

Proportion had to be beautiful.

And every detail had to deserve its place.

From the tiny Type 13 to the formidable Type 35.

From the impossible Royale to Jean's unforgettable Atlantic.

And now, from the Veyron and Chiron to the Tourbillon.

The cars have changed.

The world has changed.

But the ambition remains.

To create something that did not exist before.

To make it work.

To make it extraordinary.

And then — to make it beautiful.

The workshops of Molsheim are no longer silent.

The doors are open again.

And somewhere, more than a century after Ettore first began his experiment,
